The company introduced two new models, the Qin L DM-i and the Seal 06 DM-i, at an event in Milan, Italy. These new vehicles boast an impressive range of 1,300 miles (nearly 2,100 km) before needing to refuel or charge. The “DM” stands for Dual Mode, highlighting their ability to switch between electric and gas seamlessly. The Qin L and Seal 06 models achieve 81.1 miles per gallon (2.9L/100km) on their internal combustion side.

They also offer an additional 49 miles (79 km) on the smaller battery and 74 miles (119 km) on the larger battery in “all-electric” mode. BYD credits its recent advancements in efficiency to an “AI-enabled energy consumption management system.” This system optimizes the switch between internal combustion and electric modes. The new models are built on the same 1.5L inline-4 turbo platform with either a 10-kWh or 15.8-kWh battery pack. The internal combustion engine produces 99 hp (74 kW) and 93 lb-ft (126 nm) of torque.

It is paired with a 161-hp (125 kW) electric motor. Higher trim models offer Level 2 autonomous driving capabilities. This means the car can handle some operations independently while the driver remains attentive. The Qin L and Seal 06 have stylish designs and an attractive price tag of US$13,762 (Â¥99,800).

However, it is important to note that the performance figures are based on the CLTC testing procedure used in China. This procedure is more optimistic compared to the EPA standards used in the US. The unveiling of BYD’s new hybrid technology marks a significant advancement in its ongoing competition with traditional gasoline-powered vehicle manufacturers.

The company has been actively investing in research and development to create cutting-edge technologies that meet the growing consumer demand for hybrid and electric vehicles. The timing of this launch comes amidst an escalating global push towards greener, more sustainable transportation solutions. BYD’s hybrid tech unveiling is a critical step as it continues to expand its portfolio of environmentally friendly vehicles.
