Diverse business ownership rising in Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh Business Diversity

Major cities like Pittsburgh are witnessing an upsurge in businesses owned by women and individuals from diverse backgrounds. In fact, by 2023, estimates suggest that some 40% of all small businesses in this area will be woman-owned, and 13% will belong to various demographic groups. This rise signals a shift towards greater inclusivity and diversity in the local economy.

However, these businesses often grapple with unique challenges, including securing adequate funding, captaining consistent customer interest, and weathering unpredictable market shifts. Furthermore, they must stick to regulations, and compete in saturated markets. Despite these hurdles, success is obtainable with resilience, strategic planning, and a robust business approach.

In a recent panel discussion, business leaders assembled to highlight these challenges. The talks featured a local barbershop owner, an advocate for Black-owned businesses, and a women entrepreneurs organization leader.

Increasing diversity among Pittsburgh business owners

The exchange offered unique insights into these diverse business owners’ experiences and perspectives. It underscored the importance of community ties, representation, fairness, and gender equality in successful small business management.

Curtis Miller, proprietor of Heirs Barber & Social Shop, shared his business journey and the lessons he learned about patience, resilience, and adaptability. Simultaneously, Khamil Bailey of The Greenwood Plan shed light on societal and systemic barriers facing Black-owned businesses, such as lack of access to capital and discriminatory lending practices.

Wrapping up the discussion, Anne Flynn Schlicht from the Center for Women’s Entrepreneurship at Chatham University, addressed the specific challenges women entrepreneurs face. She highlighted the need for mentorship programs, equal opportunities, and a culture of respect and inclusion in the entrepreneurial ecosystem.
