Indiana receives $868M for broadband expansion

Broadband Expansion

Indiana will soon benefit from an $868 million federal grant aimed at improving internet access across the state. This funding comes from the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment program, part of the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. “It’s not an advantage to be connected by broadband; it’s a necessity,” Gov. Eric Holcomb stated at a press conference on Monday. The state has received initial approval from the Department of Commerce’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) for its proposal to enhance high-speed internet access. The next step involves soliciting proposals from internet service providers (ISPs) on how they plan to expand their networks.

Federal grant boosts Indiana broadband

Stephen Cox, Indiana’s state infrastructure and broadband administrator, indicated that the state will prioritize areas with the least access and slowest speeds. Alan Davidson, NTIA administrator, likened these investments to seminal projects from previous generations, such as electrifying homes and constructing the interstate highway system.

Davidson emphasized that the NTIA expedites the approval process so states can commence projects promptly. The grant money incentivizes ISPs to develop infrastructure in traditionally underserved areas, such as low-income neighborhoods, small towns, and rural communities. This initiative is part of a broader federal effort, with over $42 billion allocated to improve broadband access nationwide.

In Indiana, some counties report that over 30% of residents lack high-speed internet access. The state aims to achieve sufficient broadband coverage before reallocating funds to other initiatives, such as internet adoption training and workforce development.
