SNK’s classic run-and-gun arcade game Metal Slug has been reimagined as a tower defense deck builder called Metal Slug Attack Reloaded. The game is now available on the Nintendo Switch eShop. Metal Slug Attack Reloaded retains the vibrant 2D pixel art style of the original 1996 arcade game.
However, it swaps out the run-and-gun gameplay for a more beginner-friendly tower defense experience. Players can choose from five factions and over 300 characters to recruit into their decks. Before each battle, players customize their deck with the units they want to summon.
During fights, the screen fills with both the player’s and enemy’s units. Missiles, explosions, bullets, and lasers fly everywhere, creating a chaotic atmosphere reminiscent of arcade bullet hell shooters. As time passes in each battle, the player’s action points increase.

This allows them to recruit more units, either drip-feeding them into the line of fire or unleashing them all at once for maximum impact. Players can wait longer to recruit bigger, stronger units or flood the battlefield with cannon fodder to slow the enemy’s advance.
It’s an unusual twist to have the towers in a tower defense game be people charging at the enemy with guns, but it works well within the game’s design. Metal Slug Attack Reloaded combines elements of deck-building games by having players select the units they want to take into battle beforehand. This adds a layer of strategy and customization to the gameplay.
The game is designed to be accessible, with easy-to-learn controls that still provide a challenge to master. It also includes warnings about epilepsy and seizures to ensure a safe gaming experience for all players. Metal Slug Attack Reloaded supports online play and save data cloud functionality through a Nintendo Switch Online membership.
