OpenAI introduces GPT-4o Mini AI model

OpenAI has released a new model called GPT-4o Mini. It is a smaller, more affordable version of their powerful language models. The goal is to make AI development more accessible to a wider range of developers.

GPT-4o Mini costs significantly less than full-sized models.

It is said to be more capable than GPT-3.5. OpenAI believes this model will help make AI more broadly available to people around the world. Starting today, ChatGPT users on Free, Plus, and Team plans can use GPT-4o Mini instead of GPT-3.5 Turbo.

Enterprise users will get access next week.

GPT-3.5 will no longer be an option for ChatGPT users, but it will still be available for developers via the API for a limited time. The new model will support text and vision in the API.

The company says it will soon handle all types of inputs and outputs, such as video and audio. This could lead to more capable virtual assistants. However, the model is intended for simple tasks, so it is not expected to completely replace more advanced assistants.

GPT-4o Mini scored 82 percent on a benchmark test called MMLU. This test consists of about 16,000 multiple-choice questions across 57 academic subjects. GPT-3.5 scored 70 percent on this test, while GPT-4o scored 88.7 percent.

Google claims its Gemini Ultra scored 90 percent.

However, researchers are cautious about the reliability of these benchmarks.

Different companies administer them differently, making scores difficult to compare accurately. The launch of GPT-4o Mini offers a new tool for developers looking to build AI applications affordably. OpenAI lets some companies test the model.

Ramp, a financial technology startup, used it to build a tool that extracts expense data from receipts. Users can upload a picture of their receipt, and the model sorts the data. Superhuman, an email client, also tested GPT-4o Mini.

They used it to create a feature that suggests email responses. The goal is to provide developers with something lightweight and inexpensive. This will allow them to create applications they couldn’t afford to make with larger, more expensive models.

Many developers have turned to smaller models from other companies to avoid the high costs of the more robust models. OpenAI took a while to release a smaller model because it was focused on creating bigger and better models like GPT-4, which required significant resources.

As time passed, OpenAI noticed a trend of developers eager to use smaller models. This prompted them to invest in building GPT-4o Mini, which OpenAI believes will be very popular.

It will be used by existing apps that use OpenAI’s AI and many new apps previously limited by pricing.
