Safaricom boosts home internet speeds significantly

Boosts Internet

Safaricom has announced major upgrades to its home and business fiber internet packages. The company has doubled the speeds of its existing plans while maintaining the same prices. The 10 Mbps package has been increased to 15 Mbps for Ksh 3,000 per month.

The 20 Mbps plan is now 30 Mbps, and the 40 Mbps plan has been doubled to 80 Mbps. The 100 Mbps package has seen a fivefold increase to 500 Mbps for Ksh 12,500. Safaricom has also introduced a new 1000 Mbps (1 Gbps) Platinum package for Ksh 20,000 per month.

This makes Safaricom the first internet service provider in Kenya to offer gigabit speeds for home internet. We have enhanced our Home Internet speeds to meet the increasing demand and usage, providing reliable connectivity and enhanced value for our customers,” said Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa. In addition to the speed upgrades, Safaricom has launched a new Family Share plan.

This bundled package combines mobile voice, data, SMS, and home internet into a single plan that can be shared with up to five family members. Customers who opt for the Family Share plan will receive a discount of up to 20% compared to purchasing individual plans.

Safaricom’s business customers will also benefit from the upgrades. The company now offers dedicated internet plans for businesses of different sizes. Micro businesses can opt for a 15 Mbps shared plan, while growing enterprises can choose a 100 Mbps shared plan.

These changes come in response to growing competition in Kenya’s broadband market, particularly from Starlink. The satellite internet provider launched its services in Kenya in June 2023 and had registered over 4,000 customers by June 2024. Starlink offers speeds of up to 200 Mbps for Ksh 6,500 per month.

Safaricom had previously lobbied the Communications Authority of Kenya to block independent operations by other providers, including Starlink. The regulator supported Safaricom’s position, stating that the operator was right to raise concerns. Over the past year, Safaricom has expanded its fiber network by over 3,000 kilometers, bringing its total coverage across the country to more than 17,000 kilometers.

This expansion has connected over 110,000 new customers, including homes and businesses, to the service. As a result, more than 370,000 homes and 32,000 businesses are now connected to fast and reliable internet through Safaricom. The company plans to further enhance connectivity by conducting estate clinics, increasing capacity in congested areas, and offering competitive 4G and 5G options for homes outside fiber coverage.
