Samsung Galaxy Ring impresses in early review

Galaxy Ring

The Samsung Galaxy Ring has made a splash in the world of wearable technology. As the first major tech company to invest heavily in creating a top-notch smart ring, Samsung is taking on startups like Oura, Ringconn, and Ultrahuman. After getting my hands on the Galaxy Ring, I charged up its stylish engagement-ring-style case and paired it with my Oppo Find X5 Pro.

The sleek Titanium Black design is elegant and feels more liberating than wearing a watch. You can take off your Galaxy Watch Ultra in the evenings and overnight while still tracking your health with the Ring. The Ring’s design allows flexibility for different activities.

For resistance training, you can take the Ring off to avoid scratches while still getting tracking benefits from the Galaxy Watch Ultra. Wearing it overnight is comfortable, with a narrower design than my Oura Ring and a protective concave that’s not very prominent.

Samsung smart ring evaluated

Each morning, the Ring feeds information about your previous day to Samsung Health, giving you an Energy Score based on factors like sleep time, consistency, and heart rate variability. The Ring correctly identified my 4am wake-up, and although my overall Sleep Score was 95 (Excellent), my Energy Score was 57 (Time to Relax) due to an elevated average heart rate during sleep. The Ring recorded 45 minutes of active play with my kids but missed my earlier workout since I wasn’t wearing it then.

I must give props to Galaxy AI for generating an accurate Energy Score based on available data. You don’t necessarily need a Samsung phone at all; any phone with Samsung Health downloaded will work. There are no significant barriers or walled-off features in this early testing phase.

Although some app features are missing, the personalized, AI-powered suggestions and accurate-seeming sleep staging make the Galaxy Ring promising. The main barrier is its expensive $400 price tag, but clearly, people are paying it. Stay tuned for a full review after a few more days of testing.
