SpaceX introduces portable Starlink Mini satellite

Starlink Mini

SpaceX has introduced the Starlink Mini, a compact and portable version of its satellite internet dish. The Mini is designed to provide internet access to users on the go, such as backpackers and travelers. The Starlink Mini measures 11.75 x 10.2 x 1.45 inches and weighs just 2.43 pounds, or 3.37 pounds with the included 49.2-foot power cable and kickstand.

It features an integrated Wi-Fi router and delivers speeds over 100 Mbps while consuming only 20-40W of power on average. The Mini’s low power consumption allows it to be powered by typical portable batteries for several hours. It requires a USB-C PD power source with a minimum rating of 100W (20V/5A).

The dish also has an IP67 rating, protecting it from dust, rain, and brief periods of water immersion.

Portable internet solution for travelers

Initially available in the US as an add-on to Residential plans, the Starlink Mini kit costs $599.

Users can add the Mini Roam service for an additional $30 per month, which provides up to 50GB of mobile data. Extra data can be purchased at $1 per GB. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk believes the Starlink Mini is a transformative solution for users requiring sharable internet service that operates efficiently on DC battery power.

This includes families relying on solar generators, soldiers in remote areas, and adventurers like bikepackers and overlanders. SpaceX aims to reduce the cost of connectivity for those in remote areas where internet access has been either unaffordable or unavailable. The company is offering a limited number of Starlink Mini kits at the higher price point to start in regions with high usage, like the US, where the Mini places additional demand on the satellite network.

The Starlink Mini is expected to arrive sometime in July and contributes to SpaceX’s mission to enhance global connectivity by bringing affordable and efficient internet access to users in remote areas worldwide.
